Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin

writer of 'dancing in the distraction factory'

His theory on music videos;

1)Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics e.g. stage performance in rock video, dance routine.

2)There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals

3)There is a relationship between music and visuals

4)The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style)
Examples;
One direction
they have developed a dance routine which they tend to do in their videos

5)There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescope,e.t.c)
and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body

6)There is often intertextual reference (to films, Tv programmes, other music videos e.t.c)

Gold digger kayne west ft Jamie foxx

1) The characteristics in this type of genre video show girls dancing around in minimal clothing all skinny, the ideal figure which is shown in the media regularly in gold digger we see lots of girls dressed in just their underwear. The music genre fits the visuals as both artists are wearing gold chains and dark colours like many R&B videos. Also the girls in the background are wearing minimal clothing and dancing, in many videos of this genre they are doing this so it shows a clear link between each one.

2)The lyrics says that the girls want to be on the cover on magazines there is a visual link as there is girls on screen on the front page.

3)The music fits the editing as the cuts are in beat with the music also the girls are dancing in time to the music.

4)Kayne west has a signature move at that is moving his
hands and looking in the opposite direction he uses this
motif to make himself remembered and established,
his record label helps him out also, he also tucks of part
of his shirt in and the other side un tucked.
